      "John Smith was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1828. He is a son of Samuel and Catharine Smith. He was brought to this county by his parents in 1830. They first settled near Rum Village, about three miles south of South Bend. In 1 835, they moved to La Porte county. In 1848, they returned to St. Joseph county and in 1852 settled in Lincoln tp., where he still resides......Mr. S. was married September 30, 1853 to Miss Ellen Usher, by whom he had 4 children; 2 are living , vis: Louisa J., now Mrs. Benj. Pratt, and Frank. Mrs. Smith died February 11, 1878. Mr Smith's grandfathers, Henry Smith and Samuel Harmison, were both soldiers in the war of 1812. They fought till the war closed, and were here also when T ecumseh fell."
