    "Rebecca Snell (nee Burk) was born in Harrison county, Ohio, June 2, 1829. When only three years of age, her parents moved to Knox county, Ohio where they resided for fifteen years. In 1847, they moved to Starke county, Indiana. She was marri ed to Henry Smith, June 23, 1850 and settled on the Island. To this union three sons were born: Nelson S., George L. and Henry M. Her husband died April 5, 1857. She was married to Jacob Snell, September 23, 1860. Five children were born t o them: Jacob E. Snell, Addison L, Addie G., Eldora M and Delbert W., of whom only two survive. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Pollock, December 6, 1906, at 2:20 a.m., aged 77years, 5 months and 4 days. ....She leaves to mo urn her loss, five children, fourteen grandchildren, and one brother, Robert Burk, who lives at Clifton, Kansas. The remains were laid to rest at Woodlawn cemetery. The six grandsons acted as pall-bearers."; Walker Independent newspaper, pag e 4, December 14, 1904.

    Notes:

    According to son, George R. Harmison's biography: "Samuel Harmison was a native of Darke County, Ohio, born April 6, 1812. He was a gentleman of sterling character, and figured among the first settlers of northwest Indiana in that early period ....located as a settler in Pleasant Township on Section 16, which part of Pleasant township is now Johnson township. The land which he purchased was school land, and farming and stock-raising was his voction throughout life."

    In 1848, Samuel settled on Section 16, Johnson Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. He lived there until his death. The farm was passed on to son, George, then to grandson, Leslie Harmison who lived there all their lives.

    Samuel Harmison, Jr. helped drive the Indians to Kansas under the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

    Samuel married Elizabeth Connell on 14 Nov 1842 in White, Indiana. Elizabeth was born on 27 Nov 1822 in Fayette County, Ohio; died before 28 Feb 1908 in Walkerton, Indiana; was buried in North Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton, Indiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    According to the biography of son, George R. Harmison, Elizabeth was born in Fayette County, Ohio; however, according to her obituary, Elizabeth was born in Darke County, Ohio, November 27, 1822: "She, with her parents, moved to White County (I ndiana) at the age of 11 years....Came directly to LaPorte County where she resided 13 years, then returning to White County and after living there one year returned to LaPorte County to the old farm where she resided 64 years."   2. 9.  Catharine Harmison was born on 16 Oct 1806 in Maryland Or Virginia (daughter of Samuel Harmison, Sr. and Nancy Arnold); died on 20 Mar 1852 in Indiana; was buried in Clark Cemetery, Buffalo Twp., White, Indiana.

    Notes:

    Catherine's last name is spelled Hameson in the marital index.

    Catherine is buried next to her brother, John Harmison; and his two daughters, Nancy and Mary Harmison. Catherine's gravestone gives a date of death of 1856; however, evidence is that her husband, Samuel, married a Nancy Barton on August 13, 18 52 in St. Joseph, Indiana so its possible the date of death is wrong.

    Catherine's husband, Samuel Smith, went to Kansas with his second wife in 1870. There were five teams and wagons. Sam's, his son, Martin, John Robinson, Bill Harmison and one other. Later they moved back to Grinnell, Iowa and many stayed ther e. Samuel Smith moved on to South Dakota.

  3. 12.  Samuel Harmison, Sr. was born about 1776 in Berkley, Virginia (son of James Harmison and Mary); died on 2 Mar 1841 in White County, Indiana; was buried in Prob. Bedford Cemetery, White, Indiana.

    Notes:

    The property owned by Samuel at the time of his death was located along McKillup Creek, White County, Indiana and was sold to a William Sill by Samuel's son, John, executor of his estate, following Samuel's death.

    Samuel is most probably buried at the Bedford Cemetery which is located near his former property in Monon Township, White, Indiana.

    Samuel Harmison opened a blacksmith shop in Door Village, southwest of LaPorte, Indiana in Scipio township in 1833 according to "LaPorte History" by McDonald.

    Samuel Harmison, Sr. and wife, Nancy Arnold, were both illiterate and signed documents with an "X".

    Served in the War of 1812.

    Helped build the stockade in Door Village, LaPorte, Indiana, 1832 during Blackhawk War scare.

    Voted in LaPorte, Indiana, 1832.
