The back row is Richard Allender being held by Mildred Allender, John Sowers (son of Fred and Florence), and William Graham being held by Mabel Graham. The ft w is Florence Sowers, Barbara Allender, John Sowers, Marjorie Graham and Fred Sowers.

Marjorie Graham remembers that John Fred Sowers gave his great-grandchildren pennies. He lived into his 90's. She remembers him staying at her house when she was a child and sitting on the front porch.

Notes from Mabel Sowers Graham say that he did not like the name John King and changed it so that he went by John W. Sowers all is life. He moved to Clark County, Ohio, when he was a child and to Liberty Township, Logan County, in 1884.

    An article about John Sowers is found in Memoirs of the Miami Valley, Vol. III Biographical is found at the Logan County District Library (G 977.14 M533). The article is as follows;

The entire career of John Sowers, of Liberty township, has been devoted to the vocations of farming and stock-raising, and during the past 28 years he has occupied his present property of 150 acres. He is a native of Grant county, Ind., born Ju ne 23, 1861, a son of Samuel and Mary (King) Sowers, natives of Clark County, Ohio. The parents, after their marriage, moved to Grant County, Indiana, but in 1865 returned to Clark County, and about 1885 came to Logan County where they made the ir home until their deaths. They followed the peaceful pursuits of agriculture, and won the esteem and respect of their fellow-citizens by their honorable lives. Mr. and Mrs. Sowers were the parents of nine children, of whom five are living : Edward, Elmer, Grant, John and Laura. John Sowers secured his education in the public schools of Champaign County where his parents had moved when he was about seven years of age, and after leaving school, remained with his father on the hom e place until 1892. In that year he rented his present property, a tract of 150 acres on which he has operated for a period of 28 years. Mr. Sowers has met with success, both in general farming and stock raising, and has 45 acres in corn, feed ing his grain to his 40 head of hogs. Mr. Sowers was married May 18, 1887 to Mary Crowl, who was born in Champaign County, Ohio, October 7, 1862, daughter of William and Ann (Mc Caughey) Crowl, and to this union there have been born two childre n; Lulu, who married Oscar Hartman and had two children, Muriel and Grace Marie: and Fred, who married Florence Tilton and has two children, Mabel and Mildred. William Crowl was born in Washington County, Maryland, whence he moved to Urbana Ohi o. There he married Ann McCaughey, who was born in Washington County, Indiana, and they settled on a farm in Champaign County where they passed the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Sowers was their only child. Mr. and Mrs. Sowers are consisten t members of the Presbyterian Church. In politics he is Republican, and his service to his community have included official work as a member of the school board.

The Farm Journal Directory of Logan County, 1916, found at the Logan County Library, states that John W. and Mary E. Sowers are the tenants of a 150 acre farm on R4 West Liberty. It states they have two children, but son, Fred, had moved away . They had 4 horses and 35 cows. They had a telephone.

1910 Census for Liberty Township, Logan County Ohio, lists John Sowers as head on the family, living with his wife Mary, son Fred, daughter, Lulu, and brother Elmer. John and Elmer were both born in Indiana; everyone else born in Ohio. John'so ccupation was listed as general farmer and Lulu's occupation was listed as seamstress.

John married Mary Eliza Crowl on 18 May 1887 in Springhills Presbyterian Church, Champaign County OH. Mary was born on 7 Oct 1862 in Harrison Township, Champaign County, OH; died on 14 Aug 1947 in Near West Liberty, Logan County OH; was buried in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, Logan County OH. 6. 17.  Oliver P.Sower Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Susannah1) was born on 17 Nov 1862 in Grant County, IN; died on 12 Aug 1863 in Grant County, IN.

  7. 18.  Elmer E. Sowers Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Susannah1) was born on 24 Feb 1864 in Grant County, Indiana; died on 6 Jan 1933 in His Brother John W. Sowers' Barn Near West Liberty; was buried on 8 Jan 1933 in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.

    Notes:

His obituary was found in the scrapbook of his great-niece Mabel Sowers Graham.

Elmer W. Sowers, 68, was found dead in the barn, at the home of his brother John W. Sowers, and wife, with home he resided, one mile north of West Liberty, on the Bellefontaine road, last Friday afternoon, near 3 o'clock. Mr.. Sowers had eate n a hearty dinner, smoked a cigar, and about one o'clock went to the barn to look after some cattle. Mrs. Sowers was busy at her work and thought nothing about Elmer not returning to the house, and when her husband, who was away, came home abou t 3 o'clock, he went to the barn and found his brother lying dead on the barn floor. Dr. Herbert L. Mikesell, of West Liberty, County Coroner, was called, and gave a verdict of death from a heart attack.

The obituary states he was born in Grant county, Indiana and moved with his parents first to Clark County, Ohio, then to Champaign County, and later to Logan County, where he lived with his brother, John, for over fifty years. He was of a famil y of nine children, eight brothers and one sister, of whom three brothers and the sister survive. They are Edward Sowers of California; Grant Sowers of Elkhart, Indiana, John W. Sowers of West Liberty, and Mrs. Laura Strayer of Bellefontaine.

He was apparently in good health and his death came as a great shock to the family and entire community. For a great many years he had belong to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and cherished the teachings of this Order. He leaves many re latives and friends to mourn his passing.

Mabel Sowers Graham always referred to him as Uncle Batch ( I wonder if that was because he was a bachelor).

  8. 19.  Grant Sower Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Susannah1) was born on 23 Jun 1867 in Grant County, Indiana; died on 17 Aug 1958 in Muskegon, Michigan; was buried on 20 Aug 1968 in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, Logan County, OH.

    Notes:

In Grant Sower's obituary there is no " s" on his name. The correspondence I have addressed to him also spells his name Sower. I believe my mother Mabel Sowers told me a dispute between brothers resulted in the spelling differences but I dotw any details.

His obituary states that Grant Sower spent his early years in Ohio in Logan and Champaign Counties where he attended high school, Normal school and the old Urbana University. He traced his lineage to the founding of Philadelphia in 1681. Eac h of the eight succeeding generations of the Sower family had contributed a Methodist minister. Rev. Mr. Sower was married to Louena Windson, daughter and granddaughter of Methodist ministers. Following his marriage Rev. Sower spent four year s teaching school and was superintendent of schools at Rushylvania before deciding to devote his life to the ministry. His first charge was at Rossville in 1895 and he served 18 years in the Ohio Conference before transferring to the Detroit co nference in 1913. in 1936 he went on a retired basis and the next year he and his family moved to North Muskegon, Michigan, where he served eight years until ill health caused him to retire in 1945. Rev. Mr. Sower was widely known as a lecture r and writer of special articles and poetry. While in Fenton, Michigan, he was appointed in 1925 a special speaker for the League of Nation's World Court Association in recognition of his platform work and press articles on international affair s which were widely circulated.

I have in my possession in 2000 a scrapbook containing poetry and articles written by him as well as letters from President Coolidge's secretary.

Grant married Louena Windsor on 8 Sep 1891 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Louena was born on 15 Dec 1872 in New Holland, Ohio; died on 26 May 1954 in North Muskegon, Michigan; was buried in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, Logan County, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
