Martin TIDD, Sr. was involved in the Connecticut-Pennsylvania land controversy, participating in the Battle of Wyoming. In April 1770, He was implicated in the murder of Capt. Amos OGDEN, but testified with others that a John MURPHY (also spelle d MURPHEE) was the killer. Later in 1784, although not included in the original indictments, he was arrested and charged with conspriacy. In his deposition to the court, he successfully argued that since the matter of land ownership was still be ing debated and decided by the Pennsylvania authorities and the Continental Congress, he should not be detained nor hindered from his property. He served as a private with Robinson's Rangers during the American War for Independence. For more inf ormation see citations from The Susquehanna Company Papers.

From gravestone, actual date of birth is calculated as 5 May 1775. Several accounts, including one from the Howard Tidd book "A History of the Tidds of Ohio" indicate that her spouse James Hill was born in MD. However, his census records from 18 50, which he presumably reported, state his birthplace a PA. In the 1790 census James Hill and Martin Tidd (Sarah's father) are found in Northumberland County, PA just a few pages apart. "Annals of Buffalo Valley Pa" also mentions James Hill, sh oemaker, as living in the same area. It is likely that Sarah was the second wife of James Hill - his first is listed as Mary Jordan who died leaving James with children.

The following excerpt was forwarded to me by another Find a Grave member:
BOOK---Tidds of Ohio by Howard H Tidd; pg 106 shows Sarah Tidd, born 1774 in Pennsylvania, married James Hill of Maryland in 1797, just before moving to the new settlement in Youngstown in 1798 with her family group. James Hill was a shoemaker b y trade. Sarah, better known as Sally, with her husband moved to Kinsman OH in 1802. In 1810 the Hills with their children moved to western Ohio into the Mad River region of what became Logan Cnty. James Hill served with the armed forces of th e U.S. during the War of 1812. While her husband was in the war, Sally was forced to seek refuge in a nearby blockhouse in fear of the savage Indians of that area. In 1825 the Hill family moved into Roundhead Twp, Hardin Cnty & became farmers; t hey remained there the rest of their lives. James Hill's father had died as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. James Hill helped organize the Methodist "Bowdle Church" & until a building could be erected, services were held in his home. Sally H Ill died in 1851 at the age of 77; James died in 1862 at the age of 99. To them were born 8 children: Martin, James, Nancy, John, Samuel, Sarah, Rosanna & Mary.

  1. 16.  Mary Ann Hill Descendancy chart to this point (12.Jonathon3, 3.Sarah2, 1.Martin1) was born in 1826 in Ohio; died on 4 Dec 1899 in Fulton County, Indiana.

    Notes:

The following is from: Robin Carr-Morcombe
The Akron Newspapers for November and December 1899 have been destroyed. Mary died December 4, 1899, so I figured her obit was lost too. However, Nerla Hoffman Royer saved many obituaries in a old box and many years after her death her grandso n took the box and all the obituaries that Nerla saved and pasted them into a book. He recently donated that book to the Akron Library. And by the grace of God, there was Mary's obit.

Miss Mary Hill was born in the year
1824, in the state of Ohio, where she
was married to George Snyder in 1844.
There home was blessed with three
    children, Elizabeth, Ellen, and Wm.
They came to Indiana in 1852 where
their home was again blessed with sev-
en children making in all ten, of which
    four still survive, Elizabeth, Ellen,
    Margurette and Solomon. Six have
gone before including the father who
departed this life in 1895. Mrs. Sny-
der was a member of the Christian
Faith and a true christian lady. The
summoning angle came to her Dec. 4,
1899. She has proved herself to be a
kind mother, an affectinate wife and a
    charitable neighbor.
"Yet not to thy eternal resting place
shalt thou retire alone, nor couldst
thou wish a couch more magnificent.
Thou shat lie down with patriarchs
of the infant world; with kings, The
powerful of the earth, the wise, the
good fair forms and hoary seers of ages
past, all in one mighty sepulcher."
    The funeral occurred at Athens
    Wednesday conducted by J.J. Kegg,
and interment made in the Odd-fel-
    low's cemetery.
Received to late last week for pub-
    lication.

This proves you should never give up. You may find things where you least expect.

Mary married George Snider Snider on 14 May 1846 in Hardin County, Ohio. George (son of Adam Schneider and Catharina Minnich) was born on September 14th, 1808 in Tuscarawas County, OH; died on March 8th, 1896 in Akron, Fulton County, Indiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
